Season One Episode 3: The Way Out
Episode begins with the lovely song and reminder of what has come before. Thankfully I have been watching closely so I pretty much have those scenes memorized by now. Aye it is fun to watch them again! "Billow and breeze, islands and seas, Mountains of rain and sun" - Mostly Rain, of course.

We begin by looking at a flashback to Claire with Frank as she prepares to head to the front lines of the War effort. Such love, such promise of return, guess this is supposed to remind us Claire is only thinking about getting back to her husband at this point. Right we know, can we please get back to the present. And there it is.... a large cold bucket of water being poured over head.
- I won't. - I love you. Claire Beauchamp Randall, promise that you'll return to me. I will, Frank Randall. I promis Read more: https://www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk/view_episode_scripts.php?tv-show=outlander-2014&episode=s01e03
At this point I am like...... um wait what is going on here! Claire are you crazy telling Miss Fitz the truth. And a moment later I was right to be alarmed. ....whew it was a dream! Yikes, crazy dream. She should be concerned about telling anyone the truth because in this day in age, or that one she would end up burned at a stake.
So the theme here is how to get into Dougal and Colum's good graces..... well you are their prisoner for starters so guess just get to the healing process. And remember never, never pour some unknown contents of a jar into your hands. Never know what might crawl out, ick! The crazy supply of medicinal items used around then makes us wonder how humanity ever survived this far.
Rupert and Angus our lazy guards of Claire. Love the line about "has she been hiding in your mug for the past two hours?" Is all these guys do around here is drink.... goodness.
We learn here first about the Black Kirk and how young Lindsay Macneill passed away after visiting the place. Devi's curse apparently....
Speaking of a curse..... Colum wants you to do what? Oh good grief. Massage away Claire.... I am going to just move right along to the next scene now.
Dougal is such a ladies man.... or at least he would like to think so. This entertaining evening of listening to Gwyllyn the bard sounds like a great way to spend some time. Especially if it means we get to introduce ourselves to Laoghaire Mackenzie. Jamie comes in and sits right down in the middle of them. The tension of this love triangle is already apparent. Claire can see Laoghaire is infatuated with Jamie and even seems to be helping push that relationship along a little. Ah but Jamie as is about as quick catching on as a cat chasing a laser pointer.
Right here if you watch really closely Jamie looks over at Claire before she starts asking about the bard. You can see which girl he is already falling for. Jamie pretty much implies Claire has had to much to drink, he barely remembers Leery (Laoghaire), and needs help with his bandages (which is a ruse to get Claire back to the surgery). Poor Leery left holding Jamie's empty glass. Okay Jamie seriously, and men in general, that is just plain rude to hand anyone your glass you just finished drinking out of like she is some waitress. Oy Vey!
By the way closed captioning people, thank you for letting me know that the Bard is playing a new song in a language I cannot understand and in which you have not been translating so really what was the point.... lol
Romantic moment shared in the surgery. Note this is the same room Frank and her had shared a moment in episode one. Must be something about that room....
And then of course there is this exchange of looks..........

Have you never found yourself in a situation that has no earthly explanation? This now has Claire really concerned, first of all because she is of a medical mindset and second because of the so called possession. Gellis even asks her if she has ever been in a situation where there is no earthly explanation. Well of course she has, this show is that situation! At any rate she rushes off to the sick boy.
Someone once said that the thing you are called to do in life is what you do naturally by instinct. I is always Claire's first thought to find a diagnoses, to aid the sick, to do whatever she can medically to help people.
Pretty much my expression during this entire scene as well.... oy vey Father Bain you are making the rest of us look hideous. But I must say sadly this was very much the truth in how 'holy men' would handle sickness in those days and sometimes even now. Unfortunately it tends to turn off people form the real powers and miracles that God can bring through the gifts he gives people. Claire even says to Angus that a priest one told her that her gifts were a blessing from God.
--------------
Alright back to Jamie, because I know that is where we all want to be anyway. I find the rather playful way Claire is with him quite charming. They both seem to young, because they are of course. But she sees him kissing Leery which may or may not have been planned I am not sure. One said once that it may be Leery did not have many men stand up for her in her young life. So naturally when Jamie stands up for her there is an immediate connection. She clings to him because she may not have found much support from any other men in her life.
Well this still might be a kiss of jealousy or an attempt to see how Claire really feels about him....
Words of wisdom: Hey, if you're teasing the lad about Laoghaire, if her father or Colum comes to know about it, young Jamie could get more than a bloodied nose. Like a wife? Maybe.
That's not the wife he should have. No? No. He needs a woman, not a lassie.
And Laoghaire will be a girl until she's 50.
Pretty much sums up how we all feel about that child and probably wont be changing our minds.
------------
Geillis Duncan and her ever ailing husband seem to be the punch line of every modern marriage comedy. At any rate I do not trust Geillis, there is just something about her. And she keeps asking Claire for more information on where she comes from. I do agree with her though, Father Bain is no man of true mercy nor the true Bible. He is an example of what happens when religion begins to control the lives of people. But that is a topic for another time.
And in comes Jamie.........
The way these two hatch up plans is just another testimony to the intimacy they share without evening really being a couple yet. Such teamwork.
Her fainting of course was a distraction but Jamie saying it was because she cannot stand the sight of blood was genius on the writers staff!
We learn a bit more about Jamie and his upbringing and see a bit more head knowledge from Claire not only about plants as usual but also about Germany or Prussia as it was known then. How many other things will she slip on in the process and how many of those will Jamie ponder while trying to figure out who she is?
-------------
The look of disappointment is evident, Father Bain has lost to a woman. I actually think the fact she is a woman is more of a issue than him thinking the enemy won. Well of course we know the enemy in this story was the false religion of Bain. So very tragic. Medicine is used so many times as the source of healing, though even without it there are miracles. Again though, not the time for that discussion.
So great all that work and Claire pretty much solidified her place as permanent healer for the Castle.
Love the passing looks between our two lead characters as they talk. Jamie seems a bit disappointed that Claire wants to leave so bad... well of course he is... he is in love with her!
The Bard sings a folktake about a woman going to the stones and traveling to a different place. If i were Claire I would have picked that moment to talk to Jamie about where I came from. But alas she does not and we left with the reality, there is a way for her to return. So that is the "way out"..... More to come!
For now.......
OĆche mhaith (goodnight in gaelic).
